Application brief 03

Retrofitting over damaged cast-in fire collars after the concrete pour.

What if a cast-in collar is damaged, contaminated or cannot be relied on after the pour?

Do not assume the penetration remains compliant. For supported configurations confirmed against RTL FA 2981.03, Fendix provides a compliant fire-stopping solution beneath existing cast-ins that are functional, non-functional or of unknown function.

As found on site

Three non-functioning cast-ins that could no longer be relied upon.

Each collar shown was identified on site as non-functioning. The visible conditions include damaged housing or closure components and concrete-slurry contamination.

Damaged spring-loaded cast-in fire collar closure components around a PVC-U penetration below a concrete slab
Non-functioning condition
Condition 01Mechanical damage

The spring-loaded cast-in collar's closure components are damaged or displaced.

The original housing and spring-loaded components are damaged, so the cast-in collar cannot be relied upon to activate as intended.

The Fendix solution

The Fendix Collar installs directly beneath the damaged cast-in collar and becomes the fire-stopping device without relying on its damaged closure mechanism.

Cast-in fire collar partly obscured by concrete slurry and surrounding construction residue after the concrete pour
Non-functioning condition
Condition 02Concrete contamination

The cast-in collar is buried in concrete slurry.

Slurry has entered or covered the collar at the slab face, obstructing components intended to activate during a fire.

Avoiding a bulkhead or pipe alteration

Where the buried cast-in cannot be relied upon, the Fendix Collar provides a compliant fire-stopping solution beneath it when the complete configuration is confirmed against RTL FA 2981.03—avoiding the fire-rated bulkhead or pipe alterations that may otherwise be required.

Non-functioning condition
Condition 03Physical damage

The existing cast-in collar is damaged and non-functioning / non-compliant.

The cast-in collar's springs and intumescent material are damaged, loose or no longer present, so it cannot be relied upon as the fire-stopping device. A conventional circular fire collar cannot simply be installed over the top to make the penetration compliant. For supported configurations confirmed against RTL FA 2981.03, the Fendix Collar provides the compliant retrofit solution beneath it.

The direct Fendix retrofit

The Fendix Collar installs directly beneath the damaged cast-in and becomes the fire-stopping solution—avoiding the fire-rated bulkhead that was traditionally required.

Pathway to a compliant retrofit

Fendix becomes the main fire-stopping device beneath the existing cast-in.

RTL FA 2981.03 includes supported Fendix configurations beneath existing cast-in collars that are functional, non-functional or of unknown function. Fendix does not restore the damaged collar. It becomes the fire-stopping solution beneath it—avoiding the pipe alterations or fire-rated bulkhead that may otherwise be required.

Quick answers

Questions site teams and certifiers ask.

Can Fendix be installed over a damaged cast-in fire collar?

Yes. RTL FA 2981.03 includes Fendix installed beneath supported existing cast-in collars that are functional, non-functional or of unknown function. Fendix becomes the fire-stopping device beneath the existing collar.

Does the damaged cast-in collar need to be removed first?

No. The Fendix Collar installs directly beneath the damaged cast-in collar, so the existing collar can remain in place.

Can Fendix avoid a fire-rated bulkhead or pipe alteration?

Yes. Fendix installs beneath the existing cast-in and provides the fire-stopping solution, avoiding the bulkhead or pipe alterations that may otherwise be required.

Found a damaged cast-in?

Send a site photo.

Send the damaged, displaced or concrete-filled cast-in to Fendix. We will review the condition and come back with the likely rectification pathway.

  • One clear photo showing the full cast-in and pipe
  • Pipe size and whether it is a stack or floor waste
  • Required FRL, quantity and postcode if known

A photo check helps identify the likely pathway. Final suitability still needs to be confirmed against the complete configuration in RTL FA 2981.03.
